2010 WINNER
Kurt Brereton We Are Here – Gazing
Judges comments: The artist demonstrates an innovative, contemporary, abstract approach to watercolour in his use of successive layerings of transparent grounds and repetitive mark-making to create a rhythmic pictorial pattern. In its intricacy and complexity, We Are Here – Gazing is exemplary of both the discipline and diversity of the medium. This painting illustrates the observation of mathematician and philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead, that ‘Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience, and our aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern.’
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Jutta Chalk Speciossima
Judges comments: The outstanding technical proficiency of the artist is fully utilised here in both the rigorous rendering of her floral subject and the dazzling illusion of light emanating from within the painting towards the viewer.
HIGHLY COMMENDED Tony Hull Beach, Kiama
Judges comments: In their immediacy, spontaneity and vigour, this series of alla prima, plein air watercolour paintings are Impressionistic in spirit, capturing the transitory effects of light and local colour of the Kiama landscape.
