Wollongong City Gallery Wollongong City Gallery is one of the largest regional art museums in Australia, with a major collection of colonial works of the Illawarra, contemporary Australian and Aboriginal art. As well as semi-permanent exhibitions of works from the Gallerys collection, temporary exhibitions of local, national and international art change regularly. The Gallery also features an external public exhibiting space, with the capacity to display up to 27 panels. The Gallery occupies the former city council administration building, which was officially opened in 1952, and was converted into an art gallery in 1991. The floor plan of the building evokes the shape of a jewelled crown, commemorating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Lift access to all levels is available for those with mobility difficulties. Public Programs & Education Regular public programs include informal Arts-to-Lunch
talks by artists and guest speakers in conjunction with most exhibitions,
and various special events such as performances and workshops cater
for a broad range of audiences. The Resident Artist program, sponsored
by Connelly Temple Ltd, enables visitors to see first hand an artist
at work, and to discuss the ideas that inform their work. School holiday
programs conducted by local artists are also held regularly.Free guided
tours of the Gallery are available to school and community groups by
prior arrangement, and visits to the Resident Artist studio and hands-on
activities for children can be arranged in conjunction with your tour.
Tours may focus on special interest areas, individual exhibitions, or
the whole Gallery. Wollongong City Gallery Foundation The Wollongong City Gallery Foundation was originally established in 1989 with the aim of raising a capital sum to assist with the relocation of Wollongong City Gallery to the old Council Administration Building. The Foundation has since provided funds for all stages of capital development at the Wollongong City Gallery, the most recent being a lift of sufficient capacity to move large and heavy art objects, as well as providing access to all major levels of the Gallery. The Foundation achieves its goals through sponsorships, memberships, donations and Friends of the Foundation.
