Wollongong City Gallery

Wollongong City Gallery is one of the largest regional art museums in Australia, with a major collection of colonial works of the Illawarra, contemporary Australian and Aboriginal art. As well as semi-permanent exhibitions of works from the Gallery’s collection, temporary exhibitions of local, national and international art change regularly. The Gallery also features an external public exhibiting space, with the capacity to display up to 27 panels. The Gallery occupies the former city council administration building, which was officially opened in 1952, and was converted into an art gallery in 1991. The floor plan of the building evokes the shape of a jewelled crown, commemorating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Lift access to all levels is available for those with mobility difficulties.

Public Programs & Education

Regular public programs include informal Arts-to-Lunch talks by artists and guest speakers in conjunction with most exhibitions, and various special events such as performances and workshops cater for a broad range of audiences. The Resident Artist program, sponsored by Connelly Temple Ltd, enables visitors to see first hand an artist at work, and to discuss the ideas that inform their work. School holiday programs conducted by local artists are also held regularly. Free guided tours of the Gallery are available to school and community groups by prior arrangement, and visits to the Resident Artist studio and hands-on activities for children can be arranged in conjunction with your tour. Tours may focus on special interest areas, individual exhibitions, or the whole Gallery.
Bookings and inquiries can be made on (02) 4228 7500.
